Athlete of the Week: golfer Max Tjoa

On Sept. 12, the men’s golf team participated in the Mississippi Valley Conference divisional meet. Senior Max Tjoa shot an 8-under 63 to help lead Cedar Falls to the win over the other six teams that participated in the tournament.

Tjoa said, “I thought I played well. I left a lot out there and had fun”

The Tigers finished with a team score of 285 with Xavier finishing in second with a team score of 299. Tjoa has been on the golf team for all four years of high school but has been golfing much longer than that. He started over 12 years ago with family ties to the sport. “My dad got me into golf because he used to golf a lot,” he said.

All of those years off playing golf have clearly paid off with Tjoa at the top of the leaderboards for 9-hole adjusted average, 18-hole low, combined adjusted average and a very close second to teammate Owen Sawyer in the 18-hole average category.

Tjoa said his teammates have helped him to be a better golfer. “Something that has helped me get to the next level is just playing with people that push me all the time.”

Tjoa plans to attend the University of Iowa to continue his academic and golf career but not before finishing this year with the intent to win State.

“I want to affect the CF golf culture to make them not so serious and to just go out there and have fun,” he said.
