Social media has been a controversial topic, especially for younger people such as teenagers, with many parents and teachers concerned for the mental health of teenagers. Recent studies have shown teenagers are using more than five hours of social media, and when asked about their mental health, many of them feel more stressed.
“Look at the confidence. It is lower. People are getting their identity from posts, followers and losing connections”, said Jay Teply, a health teacher. “Social media can be used appropriately, by relieving stress, but it can be overused.”
Brian Winkel, a journalism teacher who teaches a class in social media called 21st century literacy, said it could be negative. “It is addictive. Its main purpose is to make money. There are young teens being exploited as it pushes negative feelings, as fear and anger get a higher priority to show up. Don’t click on things that are negative, and don’t hook into that.”
As for the best ways to improve better mental health, “Exercise and physical activity, having journal or meditating, and vent emotionally,” Teply said. “Any teachers, friends, counselors.”
Winkel also shared his thoughts on ways to improve mental health by being active in many ways. “Lift weights, or many people like to run or rather walk through the woods. Try not to sit. You can be doing pickleball or running; there are other activities such as basketball, football. In Cedar Falls you can find a spot to compete both in school, and outside school, there are many clubs. For me it’s outdoors, biking and paddling.”
Although more teens have experienced mental health problems from social media, Winkel said there is also more access to resources that can help them, including counselors and adults to talk to.
