Teachers find AI has educational advantages as well as limits

AI has become a powerful tool in recent years, it has been a useful tool for students and even some staff. Due to its use it has become controversial, with some states such as California even banning “deep fakes,” due to misinformation about different topics.

Keaton Engels, a industrial technology coach, addressed how AI is being used in schools, “There are concerns that AI is being used, but it’s not going away, and it is worrying that students will get into trouble without learning about it’s capabilities and it should be taught to students, about what it really does.”

Julie Kirkpatrick, a computer science teacher, also shared her thoughts. “My biggest concern is people replacing learning with generative AI; it will hinder your ability to code.”

There have also been positives of AI. “AI should make work more efficient,” Engels said. “The internet changed learning in the early 2000s. A lot of the information was found in the books, but the internet has changed that information. AI allows students to find more information, and get it. Where the information is and the quality are some positives.”

Kirkpatrick also shared her thoughts. “It allows work to be faster, and it allows students to not stay stuck on their work,” but Kirkpatrick also said, “AI is not always correct, and can be biased. It can also sacrifice learning opportunities.”

Due to AI’s usage, it remains uncertain what will happen with the future of it in education. More teachers have allowed the use of the technology, but they also remain aware of its shortcomings.
