Senior applies tech insights to new high school

As senior Isaac Hutchison walks the halls of the new high school, he can see his influence in making it all come together. Hutchison runs his own audio and visual company, installing technology around the community as well as installing some tech here at the new high school.

In October of 2022, he started Vulcan AVL, a company where he is its sole proprietor, running the company all on his own, being the sole employee, manager and boss. Hutchison said that at Vulcan AVL he specializes in installing AV equipment that his clients have purchased. Although he has been operating under a big consultant company and has been mostly working around the community, over the past summer, Hutchison was invited up to the high school to help install some AV tech around the school during which he learned more about the business and more about AV.

“A friend’s dad asked me if I wanted to come up here and help install some of the AV stuff into this building,” Hutchison said. “He’s been kinda teaching me more about the business side of things.”

Although he said he has fun at his job, he admits it’s tedious at times, learning how to do business taxes, maintain school and work, and, in general, running a business itself is very difficult. He said another twist is that not many places will give liability insurance to a 17 year old.

“When you’re young, it’s hard to run a business. My business license is currently owned by my parents. A lot of stuff needs to be signed off by your parents when you’re still a minor,” Hutchison said.

He also said that because he is self-employed, it may be more difficult  for him to secure references for his future aspirations.

“When you’ve run your own company for a while it gets hard to work for something that you get paid less for when you originally were paying yourself,” Hutchison said.

Hutchinson plans to go to Hawkeye for policing science, hoping to continue running his company before he gets his degree, after which he wants to slide back into having a regular job. So, although his work may lie hidden in the wiring pulling it all together, the CFHS community can appreciate the effort Hutchison put to improve their paths as they also log onto their futures.
