Sophomore embarks on Eagle Scout project for Hartman Reserve

Sophomore Zachary England began his Eagle Project for Hartman Reserve in June 2024, planning to create a book box for children.

“One of the things they wanted at that memorial was a lending library full of nature books for children to read,” England said.

A longtime scout, England cites his brother as a significant motivation in his journey. His brother, who did not complete the requirements for Eagle Scout, has inspired him in various ways.

Hartman Reserve has been instrumental in the project, providing both funding and the initial idea for the book box.

“Hartman Reserve was very generous and paid for all of it,” England said.

However, England must complete the project before winter conditions hinder progress. He noted the urgency of the timeline.

“We need to get the holes dug and the cement filled in before the ground freezes over, and we may be cutting it a bit close,” he said.

The path to his project has involved extensive approval processes, including, England said, preparing the necessary documentation.

“I got a copy of the Eagle Scout worksheet, then I just filled it out. Once it was completed with details like estimated costs and the organization I’m working with, I got it checked off first by Hartman, then by our scout leaders and finally by the council,” England said.

England aspires to complete the project by Nov. 9.
