The lit Jack O’ Lanterns get their flames blown out, the bats go back to their resting place and the ghouls and zombies go back to their graves, signifying the end of the Halloween season. Now we have people slowly preparing for Thanksgiving (or, more accurately, Christmas) as the cold weather truly sets in. Now all that’s left is to eat all of the candy leftover from that spooky night. Interestingly enough though, since a lot of people didn’t go trick or treating this year, how are we supposed to know what people dressed up as for Halloween? That’s what we at Tiger Hi-Line tackled for this week.
Senior Aidan Baldus came to school for Halloween in quite the snazzy costume this year, despite not many dressing up to school. “I dressed up as a super epic wizard this year,” he said. Regarding why he chose to dress as a wizard this year, he said, “The world needed a wizard, so I stepped into that role.” Baldus noted not many students dressed up this year to school for Halloween. “I think that a lot of people at school are nervous of being seen as silly or whimsical, but it’s OK to be silly and whimsical for just a day.”
Another senior, Daniel Slaughter, dressed up as a “philosopher” this year, suited up with a sweater vest, tie and nice vintage blazer. What topped the entire outfit off was an iconic toy pipe to really play into the role. Since philosopher is such a broad term, though, it seems many others got his costume wrong. “Someone called me Sherlock Holmes earlier. I also got called Sigmund Freud.” Sometimes, though, it can be pretty funny when others get your outfit wrong, as it allows you to play into it. Might as well, right?
Senior Dallas Hoeppner also decided to dress up this year, though this year not as anything in specific but more of an original concept. Putting a suit over a jacket, and wearing a mechanical full head mask/helmet, he becomes an almost cyberpunk like ninja with a mechanical helmet that probably cost a pretty penny. Whilst he wasn’t allowed to wear the mask to school, the outfit itself was jet black and made him look awesome. Sometimes during the Halloween season, it isn’t about being someone else, and is instead just about dressing up awesome for the fun of it. I mean, not many other days where you can freely dress up as whatever you want without getting funny glances.
Overall, even though Halloween season is very much over and past us, it’s fun to recollect on what we dressed up as not only this past year but as we grew up as well. A lot of the time, what we dress up as reflects our interests and who we are as people. I hope as the years progress, that never changes.
