Southdale choir will perform on Main Street tonight

Southdale fifth and sixth grade chorus sang at the Festival of Lights on Dec. 3. They performed five different winter-themed songs called “Winter Fantasy,” “Hot Cup of Cocoa,” “Over the River,” “Carol the Bells” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Lindsay Marks is the music teacher at Southdale. She said, “‘Carol the Bells’ is a harder song for them to sing because of the different ranges and the distant harmonies.”

The students also had fun learning “Carol the Bells.” The chorus meets 20 minutes once a week to practice. Cash Greenleaf is a fifth grade student in chorus. He said, “It was fun to learn ‘Carol the Bells’ because we got to echo the other part.”

The Southdale chorus has 82 students in total. Marks said, “It’s extra opportunities for kids to be a part of a group, kind of like a team.”

Greenleaf said, “I like that I get a chance to sing more than in my normal music class.”

Their next performance is on Thursday Dec. 21. It is in downtown Cedar Falls where they will be caroling around from 6-7:45 p.m. At 6:20 p.m. they will be singing their full winter concert in front of the stage by Santa’s Workshop on Main Street.
