Women’s leadership group gears up for new semester

Counselor Erin Gardner, the adviser of Women’s Leadership, was thrilled to see the number of students eager to join Women’s Leadership on Thursday, Feb. 12. Women’s Leadership group encircles its members with comfort and provides a safe space to talk about any issues bothering female students at the high school.

Although the group usually takes place all year long, this year, Women’s Leadership is only one semester long. Gardner said her main goal is to make students feel safe. “We brainstorm ideas of what the students want to discuss. Some ideas are talking about self-acceptance, relationships, and self-care,” Gardner said.

Gardner said she is excited for the remainder of the year and is looking forward to more group meetings. “This year’s group is awesome. They connected with one another, and I think everyone was just comfortable,” she said.

Junior Malina Amjadi discovered Women’s Leadership during a freshman presentation. Similar to junior high’s group, LEAD, Amjadi said it seemed like a comfortable space for students to connect and share experiences with each other.

Amjadi has been a part of Women’s Leadership since her sophomore year and said, “This year we’re going with a different approach than last year, which is to prioritize conversations with each other to promote connection and a feeling of community even when half our members are online students.”

However, the agenda of the group is decided entirely on the rest of the group as a whole.

Amjadi said she thinks more students will join Women’s Leadership by hearing about it from their friends. “New members are always welcome and since the meetings aren’t as formal as some other clubs. It’s totally cool to attend a couple to see if it’s something you’re interested in. All a student has to do is attend and ask Mrs. Gardner to add them to our Schoology page,” she said.
