We must unite through diversity

Throughout the nation, rage has reached a new level as President Trump followed through with his campaign promises.

According to CNN, at least 25 U.S. cities have hosted protests since the inauguration in opposition to Trump’s presidency. The most recent executive order, a plan to halt the immigration of people from certain countries, has outraged thousands. Now more than ever, we must come together as a nation to celebrate the diversity that lies within us.

Cultural Diversity is extremely important, and is a concept President Trump does not appear to be showing his knowledge of at the moment. With diversity, we learn from one another, pushing us all to be accepting of our differences.

Don’t get me wrong, safety is important, but is this the correct way to go about it?

On Jan. 30, President Trump tweeted, “If the ban were announced with a one week notice, the ‘bad’ would rush into our country during that week. A lot of bad ‘dudes’ out there!” President Trump is clearly fearful of radical Islamic terrorism, but banning predominantly Muslim countries from immigrating to the states shows a quality of intolerance, not protection.

Multiple airports have been swarming with protesters since Saturday. Hundreds of colorful signs and banners represented the hearts of these protesters, as they exercised their First Amendment right to peacefully protest Trump’s orders. However, with the rise in opposition, we must ask ourselves: Is our country divided despite the orders, or because of them?
