Troop 44 builds skills with cave camping in November

Troop 44 traveled to Eagle Cave in Blue River, Wisc., on Nov. 15 for a weekend camping trip. The troop explored the cave and spent the night in its vastness.

The first six of the 10 left on Friday, preparing for the 2.5-hour drive. Once they arrived, they headed straight to the cave to see where they would be staying for the next two days.

Their campsite was near the cave’s exit, which allowed them to leave easily for necessities like the bathroom. However, they soon realized this convenience came with challenges.

“At first, I thought it was nice with a good temperature, but it was wet, and the lights were on all night,” sophomore Elijah Strei said.

The lights were kept on for safety as the others left the cave, and visibility was needed for those remaining.

While there were plenty of activities to enjoy—including exploring the cave, playing at a nearby playground and using a mini arcade—sophomore Zachary England said his favorite part was exploring the cave.

“I really enjoyed exploring the cave, especially when the camp counselors provided challenges, such as finding the hidden stuffed animals,” England said.

He said camping in such a unique environment wasn’t without its struggles. “It was muddy and dry inside the cave, ruining my shoes and giving me chapped lips. Outside, it was cold, so no matter where you were, you had a problem,” he said.

Strei had one final thought to share, “I had a great time sleeping in the cave and it was an overall great experience”
