There are many benefits to reading a book, and studies have shown that reading can improve enhanced brain activity and vocabulary, as well as better sleep. There have been studies that show older people read more than any other age group, as most read for pleasure. Reading for the younger generations has been increasing, though, through e-books and audio books.
“Reading exposes students to new words, ideas and terminology that they might not encounter in their everyday life,” English teacher Molly Magill said. “Reading challenges thinking, develops new perspectives and helps students to learn about new topics/information.”
There are challenges librarians face too. Magill said, “If students don’t know when or how to access the library. Mrs. Hendrickson and Mrs. Herndon are excellent resources.”
She encouraged students to “put your phone down and read for 15-20 minutes before bed.” Many of the younger generation have been using more technology related to phone usage, so it is a way to try and quit using it as a distraction.
There are many benefits to reading, and it is a great way to relieve stress, as well as finding better ways to get more energy and sleep. While reading may not be for everyone, there are different ways to read, as you can do it online, or even listening can be one way.
Although there still are not as many people reading books, libraries are still a place that are useful to find a place to be able to read.
