No. 1-ranked golf team advances to state meet in Cedar Rapids this weekend

The men’s golf team remains almost undefeated as it heads into State this weekend, only losing to one team so far this year. On Sept. 26,  the team scored a 300 to beat Cedar Rapids Xavier by 12 strokes.

Senior Max Tjoa led the way for the Tigers that day, with a one-under and scoring 71, which earned him medalist honors.

Senior Owen Sawyer shot 74, followed up by junior Evan Schofield and senior Jack Beecher, who were 76 and 79.

Cedar Falls finished first with a 54-hole total of 890 strokes, 38 strokes ahead of Xavier.

Sawyer was announced Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year after shooting 7-under, and 209 strokes over the event.

On Monday, Oct. 3, at Thunder Hills Country Club, the Tigers edged out Dubuque Walhert on a tiebreaker to win the district team title.

The Tigers were led by Iowa state commit Sawyer. He earned medalist honors after winning a tiebreaker against Dubuque Hempstead’s Wil Sigwarth. Both players shot 1-over 72s.

“The team is doing really good this year. Our team has more depth and consistency that most teams in the state have, and that’s what makes us the best,” Sawyer said.

The men’s golf team will continue its season with the Iowa State High School Golf Meet this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8, at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. The team is ranked No. 1 in the state.
