The state champion men’s golf team has an upcoming fundraising event in an effort to raise money to send the team to the national championship, located in North Carolina. Students will play at a high level course, and pay for the tournament, practice rounds and travel expenses. Any left over funds will be used for funding the team in the following years.
The team is able to participate in the event because they won the 2021 Class 4A State Championship and received an invite to the invitational at Pinehurst Golf Resort scheduled for July 11-13.
Coach Jeremiah Longnecker said how this opportunity is a unique chance. “The opportunity for our golfers to go play three of the best courses in the United States is very rare. Combine that with the chance to compete in this level of tournament, and it makes for a very special opportunity,” Longnecker said.
Junior team member Jack Beecher said he is looking forward to the event. “Being on the golf team is rewarding and enjoyable,” Beecher said. “We have built a nice community as a team where we all push each other to practice and play as much as possible. Golf isn’t a physically demanding sport, so it’s fun to go to practice every day and get better with your friends. As a team this last year, we won most meets we played in, and then handled the competition at the state tournament pretty well. This national tournament will provide us with a good team challenge to push us to play our best. Along with improving, this will just be a good opportunity to bond as a team.”
Longnecker attributes this opportunity to the efforts of the team. “Talent, coachability and camaraderie. Winning the first state title in school history was an awesome achievement, but doing it with this team made it even better,” Longnecker said. “These guys never wanted to leave the golf course, and they practiced until dark on more nights than I care to count. They constantly found ways to compete against one another, something I think made them steady when it came to competing against other teams.”
The golf team would love it if anyone wants to contribute in helping get them to Nationals, and thank everyone for their support. To make a donation, go to this website.
