Athlete of the Week: JT Metcalf

Senior JT Metcalf scored the game winning goal with nine seconds left to propel the Waterloo Warriors to a win over the Omaha Junior Lancers last week. 

 

For you, what was a highlight of your most recent competition?

The highlight of the most recent competition was coming together as a team and winning nine out of our last 10 games.

What makes your sport special and different?

Hockey is special because it is played at such a high speed and it makes the game itself very difficult.

How long have you been into this sport, and what were the early days of your participation? 

I have been playing hockey for 15 years now. My early days consisted of learning how to skate and how to control the puck.

How did/do you cope with any setbacks/losses you’ve experienced in your sport?

When we lose as a team we just put the loss behind us and move on, try not to think about it.

Who has been particularly influential in helping your growth in this sport?

I would say my teammates are the most influential part of my game. If I am feeling down they will always pick me up and push on.

What do you do to prepare yourself before a game?

Before every game I listen to the same music and do the same warm up to make sure everything is the same.

How do you work on improving your skills in this sport?

As a team we practice five days a week and work out every day as well.

What’s a personal skill that you are targeting lately?

I have been working on my skating skills to make me faster and an all around better player.

Do you have plans to play this sport after high school?

I have not decided if I will be playing after high school yet.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your sport?

The most rewarding part of hockey is winning games and celebrating with the boys after those big games

What has been a highlight for you/your team so far this season?

The highlight of our season so far is going on a nice win streak and only losing one game so far.

As you see it, what are the biggest tests remaining for you/your team yet this season?

The biggest tests we have yet this season are long road trips and having to play bigger and faster teams than us.
