Athlete of the Week: Myah Brinker

Junior Myah Brinker is the athlete of the week this after after her first place finish in discus and placing in shot put at State recently.

What was a highlight of this season for you?

The highlight for me from State was definitely winning discus. It was absolutely pouring when I stepped into the ring for my winning throw. I knew I had to grind it out right there in order for me to win.

How long have you been involved in throwing discus?

I’ve been throwing ever since seventh grade.

How do you work on improving?

During the season we practice/throw every day, and off season lifting is essential in order to be ready for the season.

Do you plan to continue throwing discus after high school?

Yes, I do plan on going to college to throw.

What has been your best meet of the season?

My best meet was Drake. I had a PR for discus, and my best meet for shotput was Districts at Kingston Stadium where I had another PR.

Any tips for other throwers?

My tip for other throwers would be to relax and have fun. Throwing is such a mental sport that it’s very important to relax while throwing. When it comes to mechanics, I would say quickness is a really good thing to work on when it comes to both disc and shot. Release is another really important thing to focus on, especially when you first begin.

What is one thing you have really been working on improving lately?

Lately, I have really been focusing on working on my mechanics for both shot and discus. For discus, I’ve been working on staying closed through the ring and making sure I’m not dropping my elbow when throwing the shot.
