For students, finding a future career path is something that will be vital to their future. There are many different career fields and jobs people can go into. New jobs are emerging, and there are places in demand for work. Studies have shown that in 2023 only 37 percent of teenagers had a career, there was a fall of employment due to the Covid pandemic.
Chris Wood, a counselor, said, “Emerging career fields worth considering include data science, renewable energy, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, biotechnology and health informatics. Careers in these fields are growing rapidly due to technological advancements and global shifts toward sustainability and digital transformation. Many of these careers are mentioned or highlighted in students’ XELLO accounts but can be found on websites like O*NET Online as well.”
Wood also added a few other interesting career suggestions. “Some intriguing career options I have learned about as of late include environmental engineers, UX/UI designers, biomedical engineers, AI ethicists and urban planners. These careers combine creativity, problem-solving and technology, making them exciting for those who like to innovate and make a difference. I think it is so hard for high school students to imagine the work they want to do after high school because they are so limited on knowing what is out there. The number one recommendation I have is to use your resources. You should always ask adults you know what they do for a living. Learn about their jobs, ask if/what they went to college and what problems they solve in the world.”
Carrie Dieken, another counselor, addressed how a student or someone can write a good resume. “Best way to write a good resume is to have experiences to put on the resume. Volunteer, work, take on leadership, get out there! It’s more about what you engage in and do. Creating the actual resume is pretty easy. We suggest using the templates in XELLO or even CANVA.”
There are benefits to having skills which employers look for, and Dieken added the best way to have certain skills. “Communication skills. Being able to follow through with expectations, be a self starter and reliable.”
When looking for different careers, it is important to see the benefits and different opportunities that are available, and counselors are a resource who can help students find their best paths for opportunities and success.
