Gen Z, let’s leave responsible legacy for those who’ll follow

Generation Z is the generation born through 1997-2012. We, as Gen Zers, were raised on the internet and social media. Social media has always been a part of our lives and has been a constant companion through good times and bad. Snapchat, Instagram, Tik Tok, Discord are just a few out of the hundreds of social media platforms that we use to communicate but also use to discover who we are and who we want to be in the future.

We were born into the internet, and it is woven into our souls. We do not know how not to be on the internet. Gen Zers have had the benefits of social media allowing us to see our friends 24 hours a day if we wished, our friends during fun times and bad, and just people in general. We can see how people are dealing with life, and see how they spend their days.  However, just because social media has always been there like an annoying sibling, it doesn’t mean that it  doesn’t have a negative side. The cons are we get to see how people get hated on; online harassment and bullying has become a constant problem for many, and Gen Zers are faced with the challenge of sorting through real news versus fake news.  Social media has immense power.

When we get older, we will still be on social media having fun with our life and friends. However, as we age and mature, we will use our good and bad experiences with social media to hopefully influence the next generation, Gen A, to be more responsible than we have been.
