What happens when you combine the rivalry of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with the newest Nickelodeon fighting game Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl into one tournament? You get Smashelodeon, Video Games Etc.’s latest tournament. This month’s tournament was held at the Cedar Falls location on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. The next tournament will be specifically Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and will be hosted at the Tap-Tap or Double-Tap in Cedar Falls on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m., and it will be free entry with prizes for winners.
The tournament consisted of three rounds per “battle,” and each battle consisted of two players trying to eliminate each other. The three rounds were made up of one round of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, one round of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and one final round of either or, and it is determined by the flip of a coin. Players continued to eliminate each other until only two remained, and those two players faced off in the final battle. Winners in first, second and third place got prizes, and everyone who participated got a trinket for coming.

Other games, such as Mortal Kombat XL and War Of The Monsters were also available for freeplay, and many players got a kick out of them.

“It’s fun coming to these events, and it’s nice meeting new people,” said Tristen Leyh, a frequent competitor of fighting game tournaments. “Everyone has the same interests and are coming here to have a good time.”

Tom Kelly, the Community Relations Director for the Cedar Falls Video Games Etc. location, agreed. “The main reason [for the tournaments] is to have fun and to make our gaming community stronger.”

The tournaments were subdued last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and just started up again according to Kelly. “A normal schedule should continue after the holidays, and after the Nov. 12 tournament. so, the tournaments will continue on an organized basis.”

So those who feel the need for an ultimate battle can come to one of the scheduled tournaments in the months ahead.
