Taking Flight: Senior earns pilot license

Taking flight into a new chapter in his life, senior Zachary Rogers recently earned his pilot’s license.

On Jan. 13, Rogers received his license after taking classes and training for about two months.

He has had a job at the Waterloo Airport for a year and a half. He is in charge of fueling the planes and tugs them into hangers.

Rogers became interested in flying when a few of his co-workers took him on a flight. “I was like, this is really fun and something new,” Rogers said. He also has had familiarities with flying as his grandpa was a pilot.

The age requirement for a pilot license is 17, and applicants first have to complete ground school online, which includes “all the knowledge and rules.” This takes about a month and a half. Rogers next moved to the flying portion, which he completed in about three months.

Rogers is able to fly wherever he pleases. He is not sure about continuing with being a pilot in the future, but for now he said it’s “just something for fun.”
