Astronomy club planning upcoming events

What started as one student’s idea for a low obligation yet fun club has grown into a weekly gathering for students who want to learn about the night sky. The astronomy club, founded last year by senior Mattea Sink, meets every Thursday during Tiger Time in science teacher Megan Lang’s room.

Sink created the club after noticing that many STEM opportunities were more competitive or time-intensive than some students wanted. She hoped to offer an alternative.

“I wanted to help teach students about how these amazing things going on in the sky actually work while having a low-stakes STEM club where you could find fun and a sense of community,” Sink said.

Astronomy has always been a passion of Sink’s; she wanted a space where students could explore it without pressure. At meetings, members plan events aimed at educating the community at a whole. Past activities include stargazing nights, watching meteor showers, observing the northern lights and even hosting movie nights under the moon.

“I love getting to watch people enjoy learning about astronomy,” Sink said, “It’s very rewarding to get to help educate people about such a fun, lovable topic.”

Students interested can check out the club’s Instagram page for more information or simply stop by a meeting. Join them this Friday, Nov. 21, as they play trivia at 6:30 p.m. and watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at 7 p.m. Admission is free admission, and they will offer popcorn, hot chocolate and crafts for just $5. Doors close at 7 p.m.
