Holmes freshman offers opinions on AI use in school

AI is becoming increasingly popular, largely due to its rise in usage on platforms like TikTok and other social media apps. Freshman Eshal Saeed weighs the pros and cons of its application in schools today.

Saeed said AI can be a helpful tool when used ethically. She said, “It can answer all of your questions efficiently and help you get a clear understanding of what you’re looking for.”

She said that a number of her teachers last year encouraged the usage of AI often. “My English teacher last year really encouraged us to get help using ChatGPT for an idea of the essay,” Saeed said. “My science teacher last year also used AI to make her presentation slides for teaching.”

However, Saeed said there is also an ethical line to how far students should go with AI. “Let’s say you have something due and you use AI to get it done—you could get in trouble or something worse, so that’s a risk.”

In addition, Saeed said she worries about just how powerful this computer technology could be. “AI is getting more advanced nowadays, and they’re making cars and robots.” Saeed said she thinks that having AI around may also cause unemployment in the upcoming years.

While Saeed said she has worries about AI, she also said that it can be an extremely useful tool to help students in class.
