Students are using a mix of in-class focus and digital tools to manage their academic work and study more effectively.
Holmes freshman Lily Garvin is enrolled in honors English 9, honors U.S. history 9, honors biology, physical science, Spanish 2, honors algebra 9 and physical education. She is also on the dance team.
Because of her busy schedule, she said developing study skills has been key. “I’ve never had to study in the past, so making time to study with a busy schedule has been hard.”
Garvin said most of her learning comes from being attentive in class.
“Most of your studying comes from the work in class,” she said. “Pay attention in class so that outside it’s easy.”
Garvin also relies on the resources teachers provide.
“Look it up on Google just to get a full understanding of it,” she said. “For me, getting a full understanding of it and then when I put my understanding into practice it helps a lot more.”
In addition, Garvin said that she enjoys using Quizlets and worksheets to aid in studying.
Holmes eighth grader Sophia Woolverton is enrolled in French 1, health, science 8, U.S. history 8, orchestra, physical education, math 8 and English 8. Woolverton balances track during the spring with her classes as well.
For study tips, Woolverton said, “For the newer people, I would say you should try to find Blookets related to the topics, or, if you want something more physical, I would say flashcards.”
Woolverton said she listens to music during her study sessions.
“For music, I would say usually kind of background music instead of more vocal because that could be distracting.” Woolverton said a lavender scent enhances studying for her as well.
As the school year starts up, students are adopting a range of study tips and methods to stay consistent. For Garvin and Woolverton, it’s integrating classroom attention and tools like Quizlets, Blookets, and worksheets to help.
